Ogden Phipps Stakes: Betting Preview

World-leading fillies and mares on the dirt will be in action in the G1 Ogden Phipps Stakes this weekend. The race could offer clues for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff later in the season.

Fully Subscribed is a hot favorite for the Chad Brown yard on Saturday. The four-year-old by Tiz The Law was denied on her return to action in the G1 La Troienne Stakes, beaten a length by Shred The Gnar. She was hugely progressive throughout last season, winning a pair of stakes races at Aqueduct in November and December.

However, Nitrogen could be the runner with the highest quality of form in the book. The four-year-old was an impressive winner on her return to action in February, landing the G3 Bayakoa Stakes. She ran an excellent race at the end of last season when finishing second in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Has a proven record at the track, winning the G1 Alabama Stakes from Good Cheer last August.

Brad Cox’s Alpine Princess shouldn’t be overlooked this weekend, with Irad Ortiz back aboard. The five-year-old stayed on well to land the G2 Doubledogdare at Keeneland in April, and she is a three-time winner in stakes company. The distance could pose serious questions this weekend.

Bless The Broken could be the standout chance for the Cox team after not getting a clear run when third in the G1 La Troienne Stakes. She was a distant fourth behind La Cara in the G1 Acorn 12 months ago, but has been in the money on all three starts since joining the Cox yard.

Ogden Phipps Stakes Picks

This is a fascinating race, and cases can be made for many of the leading contenders. However, Nitrogen has the best form in the book, having already scored multiple wins in graded company. Holds the key piece of form after winning the G1 Alabama at Saratoga last summer, beating Kentucky Oaks victor Good Cheer in the process.
