A competitive looking Group D at EURO 2024 gets underway in Hamburg on Sunday, with the Netherlands hoping to avoid a shock defeat against Poland on matchday one. Ronald Koeman will be hoping to exceed expectations with his side this summer, and they could be among the dark horse chances if piecing together their very best form in Germany.
The Dutch last won the EUROs in 1988, but they have been three-time semi-finalists since that major honor. However, they were underwhelming at the previous edition when losing to Czechia in the round of 16. They qualified for the tournament this year in effortless style, winning six of their eight matches, with their only two defeats coming at the hands of France.

Poland will be an outside chance to reach the round of 16 this summer, but it could be hard to completely rule out their chances based on their experience at major tournaments. The nation has qualified for the last four editions of the EUROs, but they have only made it out of the group stage on one occasion. In 2021, they lost two of their three matches at EURO 2020.
Their recent form would likely be the biggest concern when it comes to their chances of progression. Poland qualified for the tournament after losing three of their ten matches, and they conceded eleven goals. But, their performances this year have picked up, winning three of their four matches, which includes an eye-catching 2-1 home win over Turkey in early June.

The Netherlands should be very hard to beat in this opening match at EURO 2024. Confidence would have built following their warm-up matches, and they could be one of the standout nations in the opening round of matches in the group stage.
