Game Preview

Philadelphia Union got to the Leagues Cup quarterfinal after beating the New York Red Bulls on penalties after 1-1 in regulation. It was a tough match, but overall, Philly’s players have been brilliant so far. Their standout player has been Daniel Gazdag, a Hungarian playmaker who’s already scored four goals in the four games his team’s played so far in the League Cup.

Three of those happened in the group-phase game against Queretaro. Is the same going to happen on Friday? It might happen because Queretaro really is punching above its weight. This is the team with the lowest roster value in the Mexican Liga MX – as per Transfermarket’s estimate – so getting to the quarterfinal of the 2023 Leagues Cup is a huge achievement for “The White Roosters.”

However, they got themselves all the way to the final eight with a bit of luck. In the group phase, Queretaro beat Club Tijuana and UNAM Pumas, with 1-0 on the scoresheet in each game. That really isn’t much of a success as neither of those teams is as good as, let’s say, Philly.

Then, in the first round of the knockouts, they play against a true heavyweight of the MLS. The team in question is the New England Revolution, whom Queretaro defeated on penalties after 1-1 in 90 minutes. That sounds like a good achievement, but there’s a caveat – the Revs were without their coach Bruce Arena who got suspended by the MLS a few days before the game.
