FanDuel

History & Background

FanDuel was founded in 2009 in New York City, initially existing exclusively as a fantasy football platform. It held its first “Fantasy Football Championship” in 2010, awarding $25,000 to the winner. For nearly the entire next decade, FanDuel would focus primarily on fantasy sports, which were legal in the United States.

In May 2018, the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 was repealed, effectively legalizing sports betting across much of the United States. FanDuel was acquired by Paddy Power Betfair almost immediately following, providing it with the resources needed to launch its online sportsbook in the United States. FanDuel has led the way as one of the top platforms for online sports betting ever since.
