Patriots vs Vikings NFL Preseason Pick: Maye and McCarthy Face Off (Aug 16)
Pick rationale
Analysis & key factors
The NFL preseason continues on Saturday, Aug 16, as the New England Patriots visit the Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET. This will be the second preseason game for both teams, and the focus will be on two rookie quarterbacks, Drake Maye and J.J. McCarthy, who were both top-10 draft picks in 2024.
Key Storylines
1. Minnesota’s Defensive Reinforcement
The Vikings invested heavily in their defense this offseason, bringing in stars like Jonathan Allen, Javon Hargrave, and Ryan Kelly to bolster the defensive line and interior. Expect non-starter D-linemen and rookies to earn preseason snaps and prove their readiness behind the new additions.
2. Patriots’ QB & OL Battle
New England’s high-powered opener masked underlying questions at QB and along the offensive line. With Drake Maye, Ben Wooldridge, and Joshua Dobbs vying for reps behind starter Maye, and rookie Will Campbell adjusting to NFL RT, this game will magnify early camp winners and losers.
3. Scheme Testing in Joint Practices
Both clubs engaged in joint practices midweek—revealing strategic priorities: Minnesota’s new front-seven rotations and New England’s pace under Mike Vrabel. Expect a series focused on stop-and-go tempos and situational play execution.
Quick Picks
- Minnesota +2.5 / ML (+120) – Value on home comfort, defensive strength, and better reserves.
- Under 39.5 Total – Preseason play calls for low-scoring, situational football.
