The Open: 3 Longshot Picks

By · Updated 17 minutes ago

All eyes will be on Royal Birkdale this weekend, as the final major of the season takes place in the United Kingdom. The British Open Championship is the oldest golf event on the calendar, and this weekend, the world-class field involved will be competing for their share of the $17 million purse. But, who are some of The Open Longshot picks to consider?

The Open Longshots

Viktor Hovland (+3300)

One of the players who is massively overpriced this weekend is Viktor Hovland. The European player has made the cut in 12 of his 15 appearances this season, and has achieved top-25 finishes on seven occasions. However, it is his recent form that is most interesting.

Hovland won last month’s Travelers Championship, and he has finished in the top 15 on three of his last four starts. His record in majors is also eye-catching, having finished in the top five on four occasions since the start of 2022, which includes a career-best T4 at the 2022 Open.

Cameron Young (+3500)

Cameron Young was my main win play for The Masters earlier this year, and I am still convinced that he will win a major sooner or later. Young has made the cut on all 14 starts this season, and has achieved six top-ten finishes. The American is also a two-time winner on the PGA Tour, and the overreaction to his recent outings has seen him drift to a massive price.

Young was last in action finishing T47 at the Travelers Championship, but his major record this season is worth chancing. He was T3 at The Masters, and followed that up with a T26 at the PGA Championship. I expect him to go well this weekend.

Brooks Koepka (+7000)

Brooks Koepka has been playing to a high level since rejoining the PGA Tour this season. The American has made the cut in nine of his 14 starts, and he has put together six top-25 finishes.

Disappointing recent outings have seen him miss the cut at both the U.S. Open and Scottish Open. However, his record at the British Open makes him a fascinating longshot. The American has achieved five top-ten finishes in the event, with his course form also reading strong after claiming T6 at The Open back in 2017 when it was previously hosted at Royal Birkdale.
