Clement L. Hirsch Stakes: Betting Preview
A starting spot in this year’s Breeders’ Cup Distaff will be up for grabs at Del Mar in Saturday’s feature, with a field of nine going to post to contest the G1 Clement L. Hirsch Stakes over 1 1/16 miles.
The combination of Juan Hernandez and Bob Baffert have teamed up for victory in each of the last three editions of the race, and defending champion Seismic Beauty will be a leading contender. The five-year-old will need to bounce back after disappointingly finishing third in the G2 Santa Margarita on her return to the track in May.
Based on that form line alone, Om N Joy could be a value selection. The four-year-old looks to still be improving for Aggie Ordonez, and she finished three lengths clear in that Grade Two at Santa Anita. It should be noted that she is also a two-time winner at Del Mar, including a win in last year’s G3 Torrey Pines.
Chasten represents the Brad Cox yard, with Florent Geroux booked aboard. The four-year-old has progressed rapidly through the season, and she could be forgiven for her poor showing when only fifth in the G1 La Troienne. Bounced back with a six-length win in the Obeah Stakes last time.
Majestic Oops and Eunomia should both be capable of getting competitive based on official ratings, but both will need to bounce back from recent disappointments. Bank Shot could be of interest as the sole three-year-old in the field after finishing third in the G3 Summertime Oaks.
Clement L. Hirsch Stakes Picks
Seismic Beauty is extremely short in the betting, and she could be vulnerable. At the prices, Om N Joy could be the improver to keep on side, especially after finishing nine lengths clear of the market leader on her previous outing.
