King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes: Betting Preview
The joint-richest race on the British racing calendar is set for Ascot this Saturday, as the G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes headlines the card. A stellar field of runners will go to post, including former champions Goliath and Calandagan.
Calandagan is the obvious contender for the Francis Graffard yard after storming to victory in this race 12 months ago. The five-year-old has won three from four starts at Ascot, and he quickly put a disappointing effort in the G1 Coronation Cup behind him with an impressive run to win the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud.
The soft ground went against the French raider at Epsom earlier this season, with Bay City Roller landing the shock win. However, quicker ground this Saturday will hinder the chances of the George Scott runner from confirming that form.
Only one three-year-old has won this race in the last eight years, but Aidan O’Brien’s Benvenuto Cellini will be a good chance after a striking win in the G1 Irish Derby. He will get plenty of weight from the older horses, but the three-year-old will need to prove that he can compete in open company.
O’Brien will also saddle the second from last year’s G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, Minnie Hauk. However, the four-year-old has been more inconsistent this season, most recently finishing second in the G1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Two Japanese raiders will also take their chance this weekend, with Wuttemberg likely to be a threat if there is a red-hot pace. Masquerade Ball has more promising claims based on ratings, having finished a close second behind Calandagan in the G1 Japan Cup, and returning with a second in the G1 QEII Cup in April behind Romantic Warrior.
King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes Picks
Calandagan is a standout play in this race on Saturday. The French raider will get his ideal fast conditions, and he has a proven record of winning Group Ones at Ascot. Kalpana could be the interesting selection to finish second after finishing in the first two in four of her five efforts at Ascot, including in this exact race 12 months ago.
