One of the most important weekends of the British flat season in terms of working out the pecking order for next year’s Classics is set for Saturday, as the G1 Dewhurst sets the standard for the 2027 2,000 Guineas.
A high-quality field of juveniles will contest the Grade One on Saturday, which could also offer clues ahead of the Breeders’ Cup. Best Horse Racing Picks for Newmarket This Weekend
Desert Castle (Group One Dewhurst Stakes)
The feature of the two-day meeting at Newmarket this weekend is the G1 Dewhurst Stakes, which has been won by the likes of City of Troy, Native Trail, and St Mark’s Basilica on their way to British Classic glory.
Charlie Appleby has trained the winner of the race in two of the last five seasons, and Desert Castle looks like the interesting runner with star quality in this year’s field. The two-year-old by Frankel has won on back-to-back starts under rules, showing an excellent turn of foot over seven furlongs last time to easily beat the talented Sergei Diaghilev by three lengths in the G2 Champagne Stakes at Doncaster.
Based on his breeding, he will only improve over a longer trip, and the yard’s record at HQ makes him an extremely hard contender to overlook with William Buick expected to take the ride.
Wall Street (Group Three Zetland Stakes)
The G3 Zetland Stakes has a habit of throwing up horses that could be interesting stayers next season, ensuring that it is a key prep with an eye on the 2027 St Leger.
Wall Street looks like the best staying prospect in Aidan O’Brien’s yard at this stage, and it is notable that the trainer has won this with the likes of Pierre Bonnard, Norway, and Kew Gardens since 2017.
Wall Street was faultless on debut at Leopardstown, needing every yard of the mile to get the better of Jesus Green. The well-fancied O’Brien horse in the same race was only third, and has since won at Gowran and finished third in the G2 Beresford Stakes.
Reverend Hubert (Cesarewitch Handicap)
The big betting race of the day at Newmarket on Saturday is the Cesarewitch Handicap, run over a distance of two miles and two furlongs. Trends typically narrow down the fields in these kinds of races, and the stats indicate looking for runners carrying 9-2 or less (11/12), those rated between 86 and 97 (10/12), and horses that have previously won at least once this season (11/12).
I tend to follow cross-code horses in the Cesarewitch, as they have proven staying ability. Therefore, Reverend Hubert looks like the interesting angle for Charles Byrnes. The eight-year-old was a recent winner over hurdles at Down Royal, and has won four from 17 efforts on the flat.
He landed back-to-back wins at the Curragh and Cork earlier in the season, and has winning experience over course and distance. Reverend Hubert finished fifth, but only six lengths behind Beylerbeyi last year, and he should be capable of going well again.
