The pressure is mounting on Xabi Alonso, and a positive result will be expected when Real Madrid host Man City on Wednesday. Los Blancos suffered a damaging 2-0 loss against Celta Vigo in their latest league outing, and they have now failed to win in five of their last seven games.
Defensive issues were plainly obvious in the team’s most recent Champions League outing, as Real Madrid conceded three times in a 4-3 away win against Olympiacos. Star players haven’t adapted to Alonso’s style of play, and that has seen fresh rumors emerge this week that the former star could be on the brink of being fired.
There will be slight pressure on Man City in Europe this week following a home loss against Bayer Leverkusen at the Etihad in the previous round. However, Pep Guardiola’s side have been largely reliable across all competitions throughout the season, winning three of their five in Europe and closing the gap at the top of the EPL to two points with a win over Sunderland last Saturday.
But, many of City’s issues have come on the road throughout this campaign. They have conceded an average of 1.43 goals per game away from home, compared to their average of just 0.75 in home fixtures.
