Pittsburgh was blanked by Houston on Wednesday, losing 7-0. Despite their loss, the Pirates still sit at 7-5 so far, a record better than many expected. It’ll be difficult to maintain a record above .500 with a negative run differential, though, so the Pirates will need some improvements on both offense and defense in order to keep their pace. This game against the up-and-down Cardinals offers a good chance to bounce back.
The Cardinals picked up their 2nd straight win against the Rockies, claiming their first series win since their opener against Toronto. St. Louis is hoping to rebound from a 1-6 record last week that sent them into last place in the NL Central division. Upcoming home series’ against the Pirates and Diamondbacks are exactly what they need. Both of those teams have strong records, but are weaker than they seem.
Prediction
I’m tempted to pick the Pirates in this game based on record alone, seeking an opportunity to nail an easy underdog. That being said, Pittsburgh’s 7-5 record is deceiving. Their run differential is actually worse than the Cardinals. The pitching matchup is also favorable for St. Louis, with Jordan Montgomery (2.25 ERA) taking the mound to face Vince Velasquez (9.82 ERA). I see the Cardinals winning here with relative ease.
