MLB Moneyline Betting Explained
The moneyline is the most common and straightforward MLB bet: you’re simply picking which team will win the game. Most games will have a clear favorite and an underdog.
Favorites: Shown with a minus sign (e.g. -150) — bet $150 to win $100
Underdogs: Shown with a plus sign (e.g. +130) — bet $100 to win $130
Most moneyline bets include extra innings by default — if your team wins in extras, your bet is a winner. Some sportsbooks may offer regulation-only markets, so be sure to check the terms.
Example: In Game 6 of the 2021 World Series, the Braves were +115 underdogs. A $100 bet on Atlanta would have returned $215 — $100 stake + $115 profit. You can also build a parlay using multiple teams to increase the payout — but all legs must win.
MLB Run Line (Spread) Betting
The run line is MLB’s version of the point spread and is almost always set at 1.5 runs. That means the favorite must win by 2 or more to cover the line, while the underdog can win outright or lose by 1 and still cover.
This market balances the odds when there’s a large mismatch.
Example: In Game 6 of the 2021 World Series, Atlanta won 7–0. The Braves easily covered the -1.5 run line., usually set at 1.5 runs.
Example: Yankees -1.5 (+120) vs. Red Sox +1.5 (-140)
Bet on the Yankees: they must win by 2+ runs
Bet on the Red Sox: they must win outright or lose by 1
This market levels the odds when there’s a heavy favorite. A half-run hook (0.5) prevents a push, where the bet would otherwise be refunded.
MLB Over/Under (Totals) Betting
In totals betting, you’re wagering on the combined number of runs scored by both teams — it doesn’t matter who wins. The line is set by the sportsbook, typically with a half-run “hook” to prevent a push.
Example: If the line is set at 8.5 runs:
Bet the over if you expect 9 or more runs
Bet the under if you expect 8 or fewer
Extra innings are usually included in totals unless stated otherwise. Because extra innings provide more scoring chances, they tend to favor over bets. — regardless of who wins.
Example: Over/Under 8.5 runs
Bet the over if you expect 9+ runs
Bet the under if you expect 8 or fewer
Extra innings do count toward the total. Always consider starting pitchers, bullpen strength, weather, and ballpark when evaluating the line.
