It hasn’t been the most straightforward start to the new season for Newcastle United, but they finally got back on track with a home victory against Brentford last weekend. The win ended a three-game losing sequence in the Premier League, and it was followed up with a creditable 0-0 draw at the San Siro against AC Milan in the Champions League.

The Magpies have been excellent across their matches against newly promoted rivals, as they have gone 14 without a defeat since a 2-1 home loss against Leeds United in January 2021. However, Newcastle have lost both of their away games this season, which is just one fewer than they managed in the entirety of the previous campaign.

There is a growing sense that a first league win of the season is edging closer. They have picked up just one point from their opening five matches this term, but they have dropped five points from goals conceded in the 88^th minute or later.
