Event Preview
The Open is one of the most exciting golf events on the calendar, and has been staged annually since 1860. It is a standout event on the calendar, as it is the only major to be played on coastal link courses in the United Kingdom. A huge prize fund of $16.5 million is available to the players involved this weekend, with the record score set by Henrik Stenson, who finished 20-under when landing victory in 2016.
That par record was matched 12 months ago, as Cameron Smith landed a first major success at St Andrews. This year’s event will take place at Royal Liverpool, with the field of 156 players chasing a memorable success. The Open was previously held at the course in 2014, as Rory McIlroy landed a third major victory after holding off Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia by two shots.

McIlroy is yet to add to his collection of major victories since that win, and came agonizingly close at The Open 12 months ago. However, the 34-year-old comes into the event this weekend in red-hot form, as he landed a stunning one-shot success in tricky conditions at the Scottish Open on his previous outing.
Cameron Smith, Colin Morikawa, and Jordan Spieth are all among the former winners involved this weekend. The latter could be a strong value play, and he’s a player that I always like siding with on links courses. However, he will need to bounce back after falling to make the cut at the Scottish Open last weekend. Scottie Scheffler ended that tournament well, as he shot evens to finish five shots off the lead.
The Open Prediction
McIlroy and Spieth will be two of our major plays for the final major of the season. Meanwhile, Tyrrell Hatton could be an outside chance after finishing one-under in testing conditions in the final round at the Scottish Open. Harris English could also be a solid top-ten bet after making five from seven cuts, while a case can be made for Ewen Ferguson at a huge price, as he boasts an excellent record in the testing conditions that will be likely this weekend.
