Game Preview

Los Angeles improved to 7-5 on the season with their win over Washington on Wednesday. They are once again off to a solid start, led by superstars Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani. The Angels are no strangers to starting the season out hot. Last year, they were 26-18 two months in, but then went 47-71 for the rest of the season, missing the playoffs. They need to keep their momentum so they can avoid another collapse.

The Red Sox were swept in 4 games by the Rays, losing the 4th and final game on Thursday, 9-3. It’s hard to fault them for losing against a 13-0 team, but an 0-4 stretch of being outscored 26-12 by a division opponent is far from ideal. Boston has had quite the fall over the last few seasons, finishing last place in a brutal AL East last season. Like the Angels, they’re seeking to capitalize on their talent this time around.

Prediction

Both of these teams have struggled significantly over the last handful of seasons. This year, the Angels are off to a much better start, but both teams did well early on before collapsing last season. This matchup is similarly unpredictable. The biggest indicator is the pitching matchup. Los Angeles should earn the win thanks to Patrick Sandoval (1.64 ERA), who should outperform Tanner Houck (4.50 ERA) on the mound.
