Pick rationale

Analysis & key factors

  • The NL has some star players in their lineup this year, such as SS Ronald Acuña Jr.
  • After winning the last 9 All-Star games, the AL has a chance to make it 10 in a row.
  • The American League is 47-43 against the National League in the All-Star Game’s history.

The 2023 MLB All-Star game is shaping up to be a great bout between some fantastic talents. The American League’s stunning 9-game win streak, dating back to 2013, will once again be put to the test.

Preview

The National League is attempting to break a decade long winning drought in the All-Star Game. Despite having 3 of the past 4 World Series champions and a ton of superstar players, the NL keeps coming up short each year. Their best hope of ending the drought this year comes from Atlanta Braves shortstop Ronald Acuña Jr., who is hitting .337 on the season with a 1.008 OPS. They also boast some solid pitchers.

On the other hand, the American League will have the MLB’s best player, Shohei Ohtani, who is arguably the greatest active athlete right now. On the season, Ohtani is hitting .296 with a 1.033 OPS and a league leading 31 home runs. Of course, he also holds a 3.32 ERA, continuing to be a top pitcher as well. In addition to Ohtani, the AL will boast some incredible pitchers, but will also need to overcome some injuries.

Prediction

With key AL players like Aaron Judge and Mike Trout likely to miss the All-Star game, this may be the NL’s best chance to win it in a while. That being said, they lost each of the last several seasons’ All-Star games, despite having strong lineups and an expectation that they would win. If the NL couldn’t snap the streak after winning the World Series from 2019-2021, I doubt they’ll do it this year. Make it 10 straight for the AL.
