The Bears tanked last season, struggling to overcome the departures of Roquan Smith and Robert Quinn on defense. The silver lining in a poor first year under new head coach Matt Eberflus was the steady improvement of QB Justin Fields. Despite still struggling quite a bit in the passing game, Fields did a lot of damage with his legs and improved his accuracy as the year progressed. Chicago’s future rides on Fields.

With Fields entering his 3rd NFL season, the Bears have two more seasons to continue building around him and seeing what he’s capable of, before he’s due for a contract extension. The biggest focus over the offseason for the Bears was protecting Fields by improving the offensive line, but he would benefit from some improved weapons as well. The departure of RB David Montgomery will make things more difficult.
Prediction
Bears fans can rest easy knowing their franchise is moving in the right direction. They acquired some draft capital by trading out of the 1st pick in the draft, which will allow them to continue to build around Fields. The departures of Smith, Quinn, and Montgomery hurt in the short-term, but also freed up a lot of cap space. Chicago is on the right track, but they are still at least a year away from being better than 7-10.
