Pick rationale

Analysis & key factors

  • Tennessee regressed last year, finishing 7-10 and missing the playoffs.
  • The Saints also went 7-10, but are expected to improve this season.
  • These two teams last met on November 14, 2021, in a game the Titans won 23-21.

The NFL season kicks off next week. Let’s preview the upcoming Titans vs Saints matchup. Tennessee could be stepping into a new era with Will Levis at QB, while the Saints hope for elite play from Derek Carr.

Preview

The Titans took a major step back last year, dropping from their 12-win total in 2021 down to just 7 wins in 2022. They made a few changes to help avoid another subpar result this season, most notably bringing in WR DeAndre Hopkins to aid a depleted receiving core. QB Ryan Tannehill is expected to start again in 2023, but may be replaced by Will Levis during the season. RB Derrick Henry’s window is also closing a bit.

New Orleans finished in a 3-way tie for 2nd in the NFC South last year at 7-10. The division as a whole should get slightly better this season, but no one is set to improve more than the Saints. The acquisition of QB Derek Carr will give them a level of consistency at the position that they haven’t had since Drew Brees retired. New Orleans still has some other holes to fill, but they’ll have a good shot at winning the division.

Prediction

The Saints should have the advantage in this matchup, as the home team. Additionally, between two teams that finished with the same record last season, New Orleans made the largest offseason move. It will depend on how well Derek Carr can settle in, but if he plays well and connects with WR Chris Olave often, I don’t see the Titans offense keeping up against a tough Saints defense. I’ll take New Orleans here.
