The New York Rangers have shown over recent seasons that they have what it takes to make a late charge in the playoffs. That experience looked to be a pivotal factor in their opening round clash against the New Jersey Devils, as they sailed to a 5-1 win away from home on Wednesday evening.
The Rangers never looked in danger in game one, as they raced into a 2-0 lead after the opening period. That advantage was extended in the second, before two further goals were added in the final period. Chris Kreider was a standout star for the Rangers with two goals, while Adam Fox ended game one with four assists.

The Devils will be keen to show that their game one collapse was nothing more than a blip on Thursday evening. New Jersey mounted a slight challenge in the second, before they couldn’t find a way past the Rangers goalie, who was in inspired form. However, that threat was soon extinguished, and that would be a slight concern for the remainder of this series.
The Devils did eventually get on the scoresheet, but Jack Hughes’s goal in the final period counted for extremely little in the grand scheme of things. A response will be needed this week, as a second defeat against the Rangers could almost certainly mean the end of their playoff journey this season.

While the Rangers were excellent in game one, the most striking factor was just how superior they were across the ice. Therefore, we don’t expect them to have any issues in securing their spot in the next round of the playoffs, and it could come in the form of a whitewash.
