Match Preview

The pressure was on Australia as they took to the field for the first time at their home World Cup in Sydney on Thursday morning. That pressure was also increased following the news that Sam Kerr would be missing each of the opening two rounds of matches in the competition this summer. Australia was below their best against Ireland at Stadium Australia, but they found a way to win a crucial opening match.

There was a slice of luck in their favor to record the win, as their only effort was registered from the penalty spot. Stephanie-Elise Catley netted the winning goal with just seven minutes played in the second half. In truth, Australia was hanging on to the win in the closing stages, as Ireland pushed to find the equalizing goal.

Nigeria has been competitive in recent editions of the World Cup, reaching the round of 16 four years ago in France. The African nation could hold an excellent chance of progression once again this year, but they will likely need to be more attacking than they were in their opening match against Canada on Friday morning.

Nigeria sat back throughout their opener, and allowed Canada to dominate the possession and the attempts on goal. The African nation survived a late scare, as Canada missed a penalty with virtually the last kick of the game. However, the Nigerian defensive play likely deserved a point from that opening match.

Australia vs Nigeria Prediction

This will be a tricky assignment for Australia on Thursday, as it will be hard to break down a resolute Nigerian defense. We expect a low-scoring clash in the second match in Group B, with under 2.5 goals being among the best picks.
