Match Preview
An interesting battle for top spot in Group C will take place on Monday, as Japan and Spain lock horns in Wellington. The European nation currently holds the advantage in the race for top spot, as they have a superior goal difference after registering big wins over Costa Rica and Zambia.
Spain’s latest win was a 5-0 success over the latter, with both Alba Redondo and Jennifer Hermoso finding the net in the success. It has been a telling sign at the World Cup that Spain have won back-to-back games in 2023, which is a stark improvement after winning once in their opening seven matches at the competition.

I think Japan are certainly over-priced in the betting for this match, as the 2011 champions have been excellent in each of their opening matches. Japan backed up their big win over Zambia on Wednesday, as they registered a 2-0 win over Costa Rica. Both efforts were scored in the opening 30 minutes, with Hikaru Naomoto and Aoba Fujino netting the goals.
The win has secured Japan’s place in the round of 16, but a showdown could loom with Australia in the next round if Japan finish the group in second. The trends certainly don’t aid their chances on Monday, as they have lost three of their four previous matches against Spain.
Japan vs Spain Prediction
Japan has been an eye-catching team to watch at the Women’s World Cup, but this will be their first big test in Group C. Spain hasn’t reached their peak level of performance yet, and we could see the European side maintaining their unbeaten record against their Japanese rivals.
