Match Preview

The Women’s World Cup quarterfinals get underway in Wellington on Thursday evening, as Spain will be looking to reach the final four at the competition for the first time in their history. The Spanish were excellent in their most recent match, as they responded to a 4-0 loss against Japan with a stunning 5-1 victory over Switzerland on Saturday.

Aitana Bonmati was excellent in that fixture, as the star scored twice inside the opening 37 minutes. Alba Redondo also scored in the opening half, while further efforts in a straightforward win for Spain were registered by Laia Codina and Jennifer Hermoso. It was the perfect response from Spain, and they will once again look to dictate the play against a talented Dutch outfit.

The Netherlands topped Group E in the opening stage, and they continued their impressive displays in the round of 16. They were excellent in the opening ten minutes against South Africa over the weekend, with Jill Roord netting their opening goal after just nine minutes. However, they were forced to remain patient against a well-drilled South African backline.

Despite registering 70% of the possession, the Dutch wasn’t able to extend their advantage until the 68th minute when Lineth Beerensteyn booked the Netherlands’ place in the final eight. However, the Dutch will be wary of their poor record in this fixture, as they have lost five of their previous ten clashes against Spain.

Spain vs Netherlands Prediction

The Netherlands have been professional in the competition to this point, but they will likely not dominate the possession against Spain this week. Therefore, we will be siding with the Spanish to reach the last four of the competition for the first time in their history.
