Analysis & key factors

Grand National Trends

The trends are more crucial to examine for the Grand National than many other horse races. The key trends that could help identify the winner of the 2023 edition can be found below:

Grand National 2023 Contenders

Given the competitive nature of the Grand National as a handicap, cases can be made for many of the runners. Corach Rambler was an excellent winner in a handicap at the Cheltenham Festival on his previous start, as he successfully landed a second straight Ultimate Handicap Chase. Officially, he is 10lbs well-in according to ratings, and he has previous winning experience at Aintree.

Last year’s winner, Noble Yeats, is once again a standout contender. He was a shock winner 12 months ago, but it wouldn’t be a similar surprise this time around. The Irish-trained runner now boasts a rating of 166 after an excellent run in the G1 Cheltenham Gold Cup, meaning that he could become the highest-rated horse in over ten years to win the Grand National.

Delta Work runs in the famous Tiger Roll colors for Gordon Elliott, and follows a similar path into the race as the former two-time champion. However, the ten-year-old could only finish third last year, and it would be a big ask to see him improving much more this time around. Any Second Now was second 12 months ago, and holds clear claims again after a nice win at Navan over 2 ½ miles. But, the handicapper certainly looks to have a hold of this runner now he is eight pounds higher than in 2022.

Mr Incredible ran an excellent race at Cheltenham before a mistake at the last, but he is 2lbs well-in on the handicap, and the better ground is likely to play into the hands of this seven-year-old. However, Gaillard Du Mesnil could be the main Willie Mullins danger, as he seems perfectly tailored to the Grand National distance.

Grand National Predictions

I like four main contenders for the Grand National this year. Noble Yeats is a strong chance based on the reasons mentioned above, while Our Power has impressed over longer distances this season. He comes into the Grand National fresher than most, and that could play to his strengths.

Coko Beach has been a horse I have earmarked for this race for a long time after landing the Punchestown Grand National Trial in excellent fashion. He has previous experience of the Aintree fences, and the eight-year-old will likely have learned his lessons from last year after exerting too much energy early. Finally, The Big Breakaway is my selection at a big price. He is hit-and-miss, but ran a solid race at Chepstow earlier in the season. This stamina test is exactly what he needs.
