Game Preview

The Champions League has so often been the competition where Real Madrid has been able to up their game when they have needed to do so. The reigning champions didn’t break a sweat in their first meeting with Chelsea last week, as the Spanish giants eased to a 2-0 home win.

Karim Benzema netted the opener after 21 minutes, before a deserved second effort was netted with 16 minutes remaining by Marco Asensio. Carlo Ancelotti’s side took their foot off the accelerator after their second effort, which could yet prove to be a pivotal decision as they were playing against ten men.

Chelsea wasn’t without their chances in the opening leg, as the Blues missed two key chances in the opening half an hour. Lack of goals has been an issue for the Blues throughout the season, and they have now failed to find the back of the net in both games since Frank Lampard took over.

Chelsea will also be without Ben Chilwell for the return leg, as the full-back was sent off with half an hour remaining. The Blues will take confidence from their decent record against the Spanish giants, as they landed a 2-0 win in this exact fixture in May 2021 on their way to winning the competition.

While Chelsea may theoretically still be in this tie, they have struggled to score goals throughout the season. We wouldn’t be at all surprised to see them win the match in 90 minutes, but we struggle to see them picking up the scoreline required to eliminate Real Madrid.
