The opening round series between the Islanders and Hurricanes took another twist in game five, as Carolina spurned their opportunity to book their spot in the next round. Instead, it was a victory for the Islanders, which keeps alive their hopes of reaching the next round. The Islanders fully deserved the win on the road, as they defended excellently in the closing stages to hold on to their advantage.
