Pick rationale

Analysis & key factors

  • World’s best turf race takes place at Longchamp on Sunday
  • Westover, Hukum, and Ace Impact among the high-class entries for the Group 1

The world’s most prestigious turf race takes place at Longchamp this weekend, as the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe is staged in Paris. This race covers a distance of a mile and a half, with winning connections claiming their share of the $5 million purse. Another high-class field will go to post for the 2023 renewal, but which horse will join the illustrious roll of honor?

Race Preview

The world’s most prestigious race on the turf is staged in France this weekend, and a high-class field of 15 will go to post. Legendary horses throughout history have landed victory in the French Group 1, including Enbale, Alleged, Treve, and Motrico.

Ace Impact is considered by many as one of the best French contenders in this race for many years, and he is the highest rated three-year-old in this field. The runner has already got the better of Continuous and Feed The Flame this season, and the manner in which he put away the field in the G1 Prix Du Jockey Club can’t be overlooked. His devastating turn of foot could play a big role this weekend, but no runner has landed the Chantilly Group 1 and Arc in the same year since the alterations in distance in 2005.

Continuous has improved throughout the season for Aidan O’Brien, and unlike Ace Impact, the distance poses no fresh questions. However, no runner has followed up after winning the G1 St Leger by scoring in the Arc. Hukum was a one-time favorite for the race this weekend, and he has been in career-best form throughout this season, most recently beating Westover in the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. But, the draw isn’t ideal, and no six-year-old has ever won the Arc.

Bay Bridge is a solid contender for Sir Michael Stoute, and his run in the September Stakes shows that he is likely now running over his ideal trip. Only one previous runner has won the Champion Stakes and Arc though. Free Wind would be a memorable winner in the race, and she looked to be back to somewhere near her best when second in the G1 Yorkshire Oaks. It would be ill-advised to rule out Frankie Dettori making a statement on his final ride in the Arc.

Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe Prediction

Westover ticks all the boxes for me this weekend, and he is incredibly consistent in this company. A total of 15 previous Arc winners have been beaten in the race 12 months earlier, and the drying ground will play to this runner’s strengths. It is also worth mentioning that he beat last year’s Arc hero Alpinista’s speed record in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud.

Through Seven Seas is the second selection, as the neck second to Equinox reads incredibly strong. At prices, Fantastic Moon could be the pick of the three-year-old runners, while Onesto could be incredibly priced based on his win in the Grand Prix de Paris last year.
