Pochettino Commits to USA Ahead of New International Cycle
A memorable summer of hosting the FIFA World Cup ultimately came to an abrupt end for the USA, as Mauricio Pochettino’s side were dumped out in the round of 16 by Belgium. However, there was no shortage of highs during the tournament, as the American public dared to dream that the unlikely feat of going deep in the competition could be achieved.
Pochettino seemingly saw enough from his players with an eye on the future, as he committed to a new long-term deal with the USMNT after the World Cup. A youthful squad has been named for the September/October internationals, with Peyton Miller, Zavier Gozo, and Cole Campbell all in contention to make their national team debuts.
Christian Pulisic has been left out of the squad, but experienced stars such as Tyler Adams, Sebastian Berhalter, and Antonee Robinson ensure that there is a sense of familiarity.
Likely Lineup:
(4-2-3-1) Freese (GK); Dest, Richards, Freeman, Robinson; Adams, Berhalter; Gozo, Tillman, Reyna; Downs
Peru Aiming to Get Back on Track
It has been a disappointing period for Peru’s national team, as the country missed out on a spot in this summer’s World Cup after winning just two of their 18 qualifiers in the South American region.
Mano Menezes will oversee the start of the next international cycle, as all eyes will be on the Copa America in two years’ time. Positives can be drawn from their results this year, beating Haiti and drawing against Honduras. They also presented good tests for Senegal and Spain, losing by two-goal margins in March and June, respectively.
Scoring goals has been a continued issue for the Peruvians, noted as they have netted no more than once in three of their previous four. Experienced striker Gianluca Lapadula will lead the line this week, having scored ten in 42 international appearances.
Likely Lineup:
(4-4-2) Gallese (GK); Lopez, Araujo, Sonne, Garces; Cartagena, Yotun, Carrillo, Concha; Lapadula, Valera
Head-to-Head Stats
- The USA and Peru last collided in October 2018, with the nations playing out a 1-1 draw.
- The only other meeting between the nations came in September 2015, with the USMNT winning 2-1.
- BTTS has been a winning selection in both head-to-head clashes.
USA vs. Peru Betting Picks
A return to action in front of a packed Inter&Co Stadium will welcome the USA back to international soccer action. Following a relatively strong World Cup showing, the USMNT should have far too much in the final third for a weak defensive rival this weekend. Therefore, the spread could provide the best value when making USA vs. Peru betting picks.
