Race Preview
In my opinion, the Breeders’ Cup Turf is the best race that will be staged at Santa Anita this weekend, with proven Grade 1 performers evident throughout the field. European runners have held a stranglehold in this race throughout history, with winners being trained across the channel in six of the previous eight years.

That looks like a trend to continue to keep faith with this weekend, as Up To The Mark still appears to have plenty to find as the leading American chance. Auguste Rodin has been a superstar for the Aidan O’Brien yard this term, having already landed prestigious prizes in the forms of the Epsom Derby, Irish Derby, and Irish Champion Stakes. Ryan Moore takes the ride, as he looks for a third win in the race.

Mostahdaf is a proven international competitor in his own right for John & Thady Gosden, and his chances are aided by the fact that he holds the best rating. However, he has been off the track for a long time since his win in the G1 Juddmonte International, and a run in the Turf wasn’t his second-half of the season objective, evident from the fact that he was a late scratch in the G1 British Champions Stakes last month.

King Of Steel was the big winner for Frankie Dettori on that day, as the three-year-old gave the jockey a final Group 1 on his final start in England. However, his effort from that race may mean that he may be below the fitness required this weekend. King Of Steel also has plenty to find on Auguste Rodin after being beaten by his re-appearing rival on two occasions this season.
Onesto possibly boasts the best form line in the race, having finished a commendable third in the G1 Arc last month. But, that tough race could leave its mark. War Like Goddess is another American runner that could run into a place for William Mott, as she looked better than ever in the G1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic last time out.
Breeders’ Cup Turf Prediction
This is a fascinating and high-quality renewal of the Turf. Auguste Rodin certainly looks to be the runner to beat if at his best, while Bolshoi Ballet could offer value after previously impressing in the States when landing the G1 Sword Dancer over the Turf distance at Saratoga. Onesto could once again run into a place, while War Like Goddess could also compete at this level.
