Newcastle enjoyed a memorable 2022-23 season, as they finished inside the top four places. However, they were unable to secure a second successive finish in the Champions League spots last term. They will be aiming to bounce back to form this term, and they begin the season against newly-promoted Southampton at St. James’ Park.

The Magpies boast an excellent record against the Saints after winning seven of their last nine in the league, which includes victories in the last three. However, Newcastle have never won four successive matches against Southampton. Meanwhile, the Saints have a poor record at Newcastle, winning just once in their last 18 visits.

Newcastle’s record against newly promoted sides also deserves a lot of respect this weekend. The Magpies have lost just once in their last 20 against sides that have recently entered the Premier League, with that loss coming on the road against Luton last season.

Eddie Howe has won each of his two opening matches of the season for Newcastle, and he could become the first manager since Joe Harvey to win his opening match of the season in three straight seasons. Meanwhile, Southampton have the lowest win rate of any side that have played in 10+ seasons on the opening day of the season.
