Event Preview

The final Grand Slam on the 2023 calendar gets underway at the end of August, as the US Open takes place in New York City. This Slam has been held annually since 1881, and has been staged on 54 occasions in the Open Era. The record for most titles in modern history is jointly held by Roger Federer, Jimmy Connors, and Pete Sampras, as all stars have won five titles.

Novak Djokovic has won the title on three occasions, but he is without a victory in the American Slam since beating Juan Martin del Potro in 2018. Since that win, he has only reached the final on one occasion, as he was beaten in straight sets by Daniil Medvedev in 2021. But, the Serbian has looked strong throughout the 2023 season, winning the French Open and Australian Open titles, before losing in the final at Wimbledon.

Carlos Alcaraz looks a strong favorite in the betting, as the Spanish star took his game to a new level on the grass throughout the summer. Alcaraz landed a second Grand Slam title at Wimbledon, as he produced a stunning comeback to beat Djokovic. The Spaniard is the defending champion in the United States after winning a thriller against Casper Ruud in 2022.

Ruud could be the value play in the betting this year, as no player has won back-to-back US titles since Federer in 2008. The Norwegian was excellent at Flushing Meadows last year, and will be looking for a response after a second round defeat on his unfavorable surface at Wimbledon.

Men’s US Open Prediction

The fact that no player has won back-to-back titles at the US Open since 2008 means that there is a trend to support taking on Alcaraz. We believe Ruud is a Grand Slam winner in waiting, and he could finally seize his chance this year. A backup play will also be made on Alexander Zverev, who has been excellent in Grand Slams this year following an injury that kept him off the court for 12 months.
