History – Intercontinental Cup
The Club World Cup officially started in 2000, and in the beginning, it was played parallel with the Intercontinental Cup, before merging these two in 2005. Intercontinental Cup is its predecessor and the competition, which brought together South American and European since 1960.
In order to avoid confusion with all the names, we are just going to refer to it as the Intercontinental Cup. Due to its complex past, we will try to make it simple here.
Legendary Joao Havelange and the French journalist Jacques Goddet are responsible for establishing this competition. The two came to an idea to organize a clash between the best teams in South America and Europe, and although FIFA didn’t endorse it, both continental federation supported it.
The first winner of the competition was Real Madrid, who defeated Penarol in 1960. Back then, it was a two-legged event, and the first in Uruguay ended 0-0, while the second finished with Real’s massive win, 5-1.
Five teams won the trophy three times, Milan, Penarol, Real Madrid, Boca Juniors, and Nacional.
Milan with seven and Independiente with six appearances in the finals lead the table in that category.
The Argentinians are the most successful as the nation with 9 trophies in 18 appearances, by five different clubs.
During the late 1960s and ’70s this competition saw a lot of controversial situations, starting with brutal games between Racing Club and Celtics. It was followed by a violent and shameful affair between Estudiantes de La Plata and AC Milan in 1969 when several players received injuries that could have easily ended their careers.
During the 70’s many European teams refused to play. Whether that happened because of their domestic obligations, political reasons, or something else, we are not sure, but at that time, the competition was a bit degraded.
That lasted until 1980 when Toyota company, along with the continental football associations, decided to make it a one-legged contest, with clearly defined rules and obligations, and also with a nice prize for the winner. It was played in Japan, which increased the regularity of the competition.
FIFA Club World Cup
Since 2005 each year we have a competition which is dominated by the Spanish teams – Real Madrid with four and Barcelona with three titles. The only other side which has more than one win is the Brazilian powerhouse Corinthians.
We witnessed two African clubs in the finals, TP Mazembe, and Raja Casablanca, and two Asian, Kashima Antlers, and Al-Ain. Unlike the previous editions of the Intercontinental Cups, the venue of the FIFA Club World Cup is changing, and for example, the latest one and the next will be in Qatar, and 2021 in China.
Format of the Competition
The tournament has seven participants — six winners of the continental competitions and the champion of the host nation. There is already an established format of the draw, that is followed in the previous several years.
In the playoff round, the champion of the host country is meeting with the winners of the Oceanian OFC Champions. After that, they join the quarterfinal round where Asian, CONCACAF, and African champions await.
The winners of these games are entering the semis where Copa Libertadores and Champions League winners begin their quest for the title. Notice that these two continental champions can’t play in the semis one against another.
Apart from the finals, there are games for the third and the fifth place.
