Preview
Virginia had a season filled with bad fortune last year. They wound up cancelling their last two games of the season after several players were killed in a shooting on campus. The Cavaliers will do their best to focus on the path ahead, bringing in a solid recruiting class in 2023. It may take some time, but Virginia should be moving in the right direction again. 2nd-year head coach Tony Elliot will play a key role in 2023.

Tennessee had a fantastic season last year. They opened 8-0, with 5 of those wins coming against ranked teams. A 52-49 win over Alabama helped cement their rise to the #1 spot. Unfortunately, an injury to QB Hendon Hooker derailed their CFP hopes, before he returned for a 31-14 win over Clemson in the Orange Bowl. With Hooker, Jalin Hyatt, and Cedric Tillman graduating, the Volunteers will have some holes to fill.
Prediction
Both of these teams will have much different looks in 2023, after a decent amount of roster turnover. While Tennessee is not expected to rise to the top spot in the country again this year, they’re still considered to be a top-15 team. They shouldn’t have much trouble defeating a Virginia team that was under .500 last season. I don’t see a complete blowout happening, but I’ll still take Tennessee to win and cover this one.
