Preview

Iowa improved to 3-0 with their win over Western Michigan on Saturday. Their defense continues to be impressive, having allowed only 37 total points in 3 games thus far. Meanwhile, the Hawkeyes offense finally broke out a bit in Week 3. That was mainly thanks to the running game, with the backs putting up 287 yards on 38 carries (7.6 ypc) QB Cade McNamara needs to play better for Iowa to have a chance here.

Penn State continued to look impressive in their win over Illinois. They’ll face their first ranked opposition this week, with a chance to make a statement as a team that can compete with Michigan and Ohio State this season. The Nittany Lions will face a tough task on offense in this game against Iowa’s stellar defense. They’ll need QB Drew Allar, who struggled quite a bit against Illinois, to be at his absolute best this week.

Prediction

This is an intriguing Big-10 matchup. Both of these teams are seeking to make a statement against tough competition, after having little trouble in the first few weeks. Penn State projects as the much better team, and is at home in this game. They should be able to win it, but they cannot overlook Iowa’s defense. I wouldn’t be surprised if this game ends up closer than expected. I’ll take Penn State to win, but not cover.
