Pick rationale
Analysis & key factors
- Alabama missed the College Football Playoff last season, but is always in contention.
- They’ll need to overcome the loss of #1-overall pick QB Bryce Young, who left for the NFL.
- Oddsmakers expect the Crimson Tide to be on the CFP bubble, with a good shot to make it.
As the 2023-24 college football season quickly approaches, let’s take a look at Alabama’s outlook and chances to make the College Football Playoff this year. They are expected to rank near the top again.

Team News
Alabama missed the College Football Playoff for the 2nd time in the past 4 seasons last year, failing to win the SEC West or make the SEC Championship Game. They wound up dominating Kansas State in the Sugar Bowl, but likely have higher aspirations this season. That being said, they lost #1-overall pick Bryce Young and superstar defender Will Anderson to the 2023 NFL Draft. It will be another uphill climb this year.

The Crimson Tide may have lost their most important player on either side of the ball, but not all is lost. With Nick Saban at head coach, and one of the top recruiting classes on a yearly basis, they still have plenty of talent and the ability to succeed. There are a lot more questions than usual that need to be answered, but if the next starting QB is able to rise to the occasion, they should be in the mix once again.
Prediction
It’s incredibly difficult to bet against Alabama, but their chances of making the CFP this year aren’t great. They missed it last year, and then lost the two best players on their roster. To overcome that, someone will need to step up, but I wouldn’t bet on it happening. Another 10-3 season with no CFP seems likely to me.
