Pick rationale
Analysis & key factors
- Florida State took down Oklahoma in a thrilling Cheez-It Bowl last year.
- They’ll be looking to take another step forward after improving in 2022.
- Starting QB Jordan Travis will return, providing consistency under center.
As the 2023-24 college football season approaches, let’s take a look at Florida State’s playoff odds and weigh their chances to make the College Football Playoff this year. They are expected to take a big jump.

Florida State finally had a breakthrough season in their 3rd year under head coach Mike Norvell, winning 10 games for the first time in 6 years. From 2012-2016, the Seminoles were a dynasty, going 59-9 and making NY6 bowls in 5 straight seasons with an undefeated title season in 2013. After that, they entered a dark period, going just 26-33 from 2017-2021 with no bowl wins. 2022 was their first major step forward.

The Seminoles have some lofty expectations for this season, being considered by many to be the favorite to win the ACC. After cracking the top-10 in many preseason polls, Florida State will need to produce a top-10 season or risk coming up short once again. QB Jordan Travis’ return will benefit them, but the biggest factor in their favor is the return of many starters across the entire roster, especially on defense.
Prediction
Florida State will need to start the season with another win over LSU, before entering ACC play with little margin for error. As a less competitive power conference, the ACC is unlikely to field two teams, so the Seminoles will need to take full advantage of their trip to face Clemson to open up ACC play in September. I’d be a bit wary of betting on Florida State to make the CFP, but a NY6 bowl is not out of the question.
