NCAAF: Will LSU Make the 2023-24 Playoffs?

Pick rationale

Analysis & key factors

  • LSU completely embarrassed Purdue in the Citrus Bowl, winning 63-7.
  • They should be able to build on their strong finish in the 2023-24 season.
  • Starting QB Jayden Daniels will return this season as one of the top QBs.

As the 2023-24 college football season approaches, let’s take a look at LSU’s playoff odds and weigh their chances to make the College Football Playoff this year. They are expected to rank near the top of the SEC.

CFP Odds

Historical odds are unavailable. The original analysis is preserved.

Team News

LSU had a solid first season under new head coach Brian Kelly, winning 10 games and finishing the year ranked #16 in the country. After a disappointing opening loss against Florida State, they went 9-1 over the next 10 games, rising to #5 in the country. Unfortunately, losses to Texas A&M and Georgia knocked the Tigers out of CFP contention, but they ended the season very strong with their 63-7 victory over Purdue.

In 2023, the Tigers need to take another step forward in order to make the College Football Playoff. They nearly cracked the top-4 last season and could again here, but need to fix some holes as well. In their 3 losses in SEC play last year, LSU allowed 38, 40, and 50 total points. If the defense doesn’t improve this year, it will be difficult to avoid the same result. A trip to Tuscaloosa to face Alabama in November is key.

Prediction

LSU won’t face Georgia or Tennessee during the regular season this year, which has a mixed effect on their CFP chances. On one hand, there are fewer games on their schedule they are likely to lose, but on the other, they will also have fewer chances to earn wins against top teams. The Tigers could possibly make the CFP with an 11-1 record that holds just a loss to Alabama, but another loss will kill their chances.
