Preview
Wisconsin had a solid win in Week 1 against Buffalo, but also showed some areas for improvement. They started slow, entering the half leading just 14-10, before eventually pulling away to win comfortably. The running game was fantastic. Chez Mellusi and Braelon Allen combined for 298 yards and 4 TDs on 30 carries. Meanwhile, the passing game was far less successful, and needs to improve against the Cougars.
Washington State pulled ahead early against Colorado State, establishing themselves as the better team in the matchup. Unfortunately, they made some mistakes in the 2nd half, allowing the Rams to pick up a few big yardage TDs. Ultimately, the Cougars held them off 50-24, but definitely saw some areas to work on in Week 2. Their run defense will be the key against Wisconsin, while QB Cam Ward leads the offense.
Prediction
Last season these two teams met in Wisconsin, and Washington State managed to pull of an upset. While I’m not certain the Cougars will pull it off again against a rebuilt Badgers squad, they shouldn’t be such large underdogs here. They’ll have a sold out home crowd and the advantage of a head coach and running back that have experience at Wisconsin. I like Washington State’s chances of pulling off another upset win.
